One of Trump’s top advisors just resigned

The Trump White House has been rocked by the announcement of another prominent departure. The New York Times reports that Gary Cohn, Trump’s top economic advisor, will be resigning and leaving the White House in the coming weeks.

While officials told the Times that there is no single motivating factor for the departure, the bombshell announcement comes on the tail of news reports in the past week that Cohn was disturbed over Trump’s surprise (and deeply ill-advised) announcement that he would be slapping tariffs on aluminum and steel, raising the specter of a global trade war.

“Gary has been my chief economic adviser and did a superb job in driving our agenda, helping to deliver historic tax cuts and reforms and unleashing the American economy once again. He is a rare talent, and I thank him for his dedicated service to the American people,” Trump said to the Times, unable to resist the urge to brag about his imagined successes even when addressing the resignation of a senior aide.

It appears that the resignation could come as somewhat of a surprise to much of the administration, given that in recent weeks Trump and Cohn had been engaged in discussions over whether or not he might serve as a possible replacement for Chief of Staff John Kelly, an upward movement that would have seen him assuming a much larger role in the regime.

Cohn is, of course, just the latest in a long string of departures, adding yet more fuel to the rumors that 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is a scene of utter chaos and incompetence under its current leader.

Most recently, White House Communications Director Hope Hicks resigned. It seems increasingly clear that the rats are fleeing a sinking ship as special counsel Robert Mueller hones in on the Oval Office as part of his investigation into possible collusion between the Trump team and Russia to steal the 2016 election.
