If you think America is the only place where there are hate crimes, consider an incident over the weekend in Spain.
An African actor went into a restaurant-bar near Madrid at 7 a.m. to get coffee when he was accosted by a woman who called him a “black piece of shit” and assaulted him.
Marius Makon, who is known professionally as Elton Prince, was with friends at the counter when the woman, accompanied by a man, said, “I don’t want black people in this place or in front of me.”

“No miss, I will only be here for a moment and then I’m leaving,” Prince told her, according to a post on his Facebook page, as reported by the English-language website El Pais. “I don’t have any interet in staying near you for long.”
The 33-year-old woman, a native of El Salvador, then replied, “I don’t care, you black piece of shit, get out of here.”
He said, “Calm down Miss, I insist, we are in a public place and I don’t understand your anger.”
Her response sounds like something out of Alabama in about 1958.
“Black piece of shit, I’m white,” she said. “I can kill you and nothing will happen.”
She then grabbed a beer bottle and smashed it on Prince’s head twice, causing a cut to his head and other injuries. He later required medical help.

The owner of the bar called the police, who arrived and told the actor to file a police report. He did and the woman was detained a short time later but then released as soon as she gave her statement.
The Spanish Immigration and Refugee Support Network filed a hate crime report with the Madrid regional authorities and said the woman was “looking to provoke the victim and cause a reaction.”
The Refugee Support Network is demanding quck action against hte woman, but the actor is surprisingly calm about what happened.
“I look through images (of his injuries) and I do not feel any hate towards the woman,” he wrote on Facebook.
“I want to say that I am not angry with her and I don;t know why,” he continued. “I am sad that she feels such hate, that she lives with hate. It saddens me that she does not enjoy life, that she doesnt leave a small space in her heart to love.”
“What’s funny is that before hitting me with the bottle she said to me, ‘I’m white and we are in Spain. I can kill you and nothing will happen to me.’” added the actor. “The truth is nothing has happened to her. After being identified she has gone home, while I have gone to mine with seven stitches.”
“Racism will never defeat us, love, love, love,” the actor said in a subsequent FB post.
Last week the Council of Europe released a report calling on Spain to create an independent body to fight racism.
According to El Pais, Spain and the tiny country of San Marino are the only countries among the 47 members of the council who dod not have an organization to deal with racism.
So the problem of racism is not unique to America, where it remains a real from the White House down, but it still is unacceptable, abhorrent and disgusting.
