Trump just said he’d like to “take a shot” at being president for life in chilling remarks

In just the last 6 days, President Donald Trump has made a series of comments that have alarmed even members of his his own party.

He’s called trade wars “good” after launching one against just about every nation on Earth that exports steel and aluminum to the United States.  He’s threatened to take guns away from people without due process who may – may – be considering committing a mass shooting.  And he’s attacked his own attorney general – again – for not launching a special counsel investigation into Hillary Clinton’s past peccadillos, despite the fact that she’s been cleared multiple times and is not in any position of power.

On Saturday afternoon, however, he made comments to a posh gathering at his Mar-a-Lago club about Chinese President Xi Jinping that should make every American shudder.

CNN obtained an audio recording of the speech, which were “delivered inside the ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago estate during a lunch and fundraiser, were upbeat, lengthy, and peppered with jokes and laughter,” the cable news network reported late Saturday.

When Trump’s commentary turned to President Xi, who announced earlier this week that he was initiating changes to China’s constitution that will allow him to serve as president for life, Trump characterized the dictatorial power grab this way.

“He’s now president for life. President for life. And he’s great.  And look, he was able to do that. I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll give that a shot some day.”

While this was by far the most ominous statement of his speech, he also had some choice words for Hillary Clinton.  After the usual whining about the supposedly rigged system that somehow favored her in 2016, he attacked her directly in the most vile terms imaginable.  CNN recounted those remarks this way

On Saturday, among donors gathered in the grand ballroom named for himself at Mar-a-Lago, Trump pondered the happiness of his former rival, wondering aloud whether she was enjoying life after the campaign.
“Is Hillary a happy person? Do you think she’s happy?” he said. “When she goes home at night, does she say, ‘What a great life?’ I don’t think so.”
