The messages highlight just how absurd the situation has gotten in a country on edge about gun violence, but held hostage by a powerful and irrational NRA.
i go to central michigan university. the shooting was on my floor. this morning my friend gabby told me you don’t really understand the need for reform until you’re worried your friends are fucking dead. she is right.

this morning i had to hear my dad tell me to barricade my door while my mom was sobbing in the background. i almost threw up. no parent should ever have to worry about their children like that while they are somewhere that’s supposed to be safe

Adie Harig used her personal experience to highlight just how dire the situation is.
The shooter was identified as 19 year-old James Eric David, Jr. in what was deemed a domestic dispute resulting in the two deaths. The shooting took place in a dormitory. The victims were not students.

The incident took place at 8:30 am this morning and caused all the schools in the Mount Pleasant area to go into lockdown. That meant all students sheltered in place, interior doors locked, blinds drawn, no outsiders allowed to enter buildings.
This comes just two weeks after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, FL, where another 19 year-old gunman killed 17 people. In the wake of that atrocity, the student survivors have mounted a campaign to advocate for gun control that has taken the country by storm.
The president had made statements following the Parkland shooting indicating that he might support some common sense gun reforms, including raising the minimum age requirement to buy a gun and strengthening background checks.
But after a late night closed-door meeting with NRA lobbyists last night, it appeared that Trump had walked back from those statements.
It is as yet unclear just how many innocent people will have to be gunned down before common sense gun control can be implemented in the US. All we know now is that 9 weeks into the year, with the 12th school shooting on record, we haven’t reached that threshold.
