Early this morning, a teacher at a Dalton, Georgia high school made it very clear why the right-wing’s plan to arm teachers is absolute insanity. While the details of the incident are still sketchy, it appears that shots were fired by a teacher, who barricaded himself in a classroom before being taken into custody by police.
The rest of the school was evacuated, another day of learning wasted as children are needlessly forced to experience the terror that instinctively emerges at the prospect of an imminent and excruciating death.
One brave student took to Twitter in order to call out the National Rifle Association and offer us a little glimpse into the horrifying chaos that our kids have to deal with every time there is a school evacuation.
Chondi’s tweet perfectly illustrates how arming our teachers solves nothing while creating a whole new set of problems that we have to deal with – and a whole new set of threats to the well-being of our nation’s children.
Teaching is a stressful job, especially in the United States, where teachers are heavily overworked and disgracefully underpaid. Sometimes, tempers flare and emotions break down; in those moments, it’s best to not have a killing machine that could end a child’s life with one impulsive movement.
The refusal of President Trump and the right-wing political establishment to acknowledge the root of the problem – easy access to dangerous firearms – makes any discussion of arming teachers utterly useless and counterproductive.
The president himself has been championing the idea of arming teachers for days on end now.
Armed Educators (and trusted people who work within a school) love our students and will protect them. Very smart people. Must be firearms adept & have annual training. Should get yearly bonus. Shootings will not happen again – a big & very inexpensive deterrent. Up to States.

But those of us who don’t rely on the National Rifle Association for campaign donations know that Capitol Hill police regularly leave their firearms in bathroom stalls and that firearm-carrying teachers have injured themselves on school property before with their guns.
The only thing that arming teachers will accomplish is to inflict more unnecessary terror, injury, and death upon our nation’s children.
