A leading Democratic member of the House Intelligence Committee has gone on record favoring the release of the classified memo composed by Representative David Nunes (R-CA) that accuses the FBI of abusing surveillance laws in their handling of the Trump/Russia investigation.
Representative Jim Himes (D-CT) appeared on CNN this morning and was asked in light of rumors that President Trump favors the release of the memo whether he thought it would be a good idea to let the American people read it and judge for themselves.
“I wouldn’t oppose it,” Himes said. “Look the memorandum as written…it is so pathetically, obviously full of misstatements and lies including the very first line which makes references to investigations which don’t exist.
Himes goes on to say that before the memo is released, it would have to be scrubbed of “highly classified” information it contains that even some members of the committee haven’t seen, even though they voted to release the document.
Representative Himes favors releasing a cleaned up document because
“Reporters and the American public would look at it and they would see it for what it is, a series of talking points in a long campaign to discredit the FBI so that Mueller comes up with more, Fox News and Sean Hannity and Jeanine Pirro and all of the usual talking heads for the right wing can say ‘yeah, but Mueller was always compromised from the start.’ Look we’ve seen this for months. Thats what’s going on.”
While Rep. Himes’ analysis of the tactics and motivation of his Republican colleagues is deadly accurate, the Fox News drumbeat to its viewers continues to play up the vital importance of this mysterious classified memo in its attempt to discredit a Mueller investigation that would bring down the leader of their party.
The fact that the memo was written by Nunes, classified by him, and then presented as something that was being prevented from being released shows the depths of deception that the Republican protectors and enablers of our corrupt President will lower themselves to serve their own interests.
Rep. Himes is calling the GOP’s bluff. Remove the classified material, release the memo, and expose the contents as the fraud that it is. Beat the Republicans at their own duplicitous game.
