At a Council on Foreign Relations event today, former Vice President Joe Biden accused the Trump administration of “abdicating” its responsibility to fight future Russian interference in the American electoral process.
Then, he went a step further, implicating Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the Trump-Russia coverup.

Joe Biden said Tuesday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stopped the Obama administration from speaking out about Russian interference in the 2016 campaign by refusing to sign on to a bipartisan statement of condemnation.
Once McConnell refused to condemn Russian meddling, Biden says, ““the die had been cast . . . this was all about the political play.”
If Obama’s White House had stepped forward without Republican support, it would have looked as though they were doing so as a craven attempt to tip the election scales on behalf of fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton — which would only have served Russia’s desire to erode public trust in our democratic institutions.
By denying the Obama administration a unifying moment of putting country before party, McConnell chose the election of a Republican president, even one as unqualified and corrupt as Donald Trump, over the national security of the United States.
In so doing, he set the stage for the continued undermining of our democracy, fighting not only between the two parties but also an intra-Republican civil war, and most dangerously, virtually unfettered access to our electoral system and intelligence secrets by the Kremlin.
With or without Republican support, we must take Biden’s cautionary tale to heart and fight to protect the 2018 and 2020 elections from hacking and other meddling.
The future of our republic is at stake.
