President Trump sent out a disgusting fundraising letter today to his supporters declaring that “Democrats Caved,” after holding the military hostage to give amnesty to illegal immigrants, when they voted to end the two-day-old government shut down.
What is disgusting about this is first, the Democrats did not cave. They made a bipartisan agreement after Trump screwed up earlier attempts at a deal at the last minute. So his claim they “caved” is an insult that Trump will be called to account for in less than a month when the issue of funding will have to be negotiated all over again.
The deal that Democrats made in the national interest keeps the government funded until Feb. 8 in return for a promise from Republicans – specifically Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell – that there will be action on a separate bill concerning DACA – the roughly 900,000 “Dreamers” who have spent most of their lives in the U.S.
They may have been brought to the U.S. as small children by their undocumented parents but they are not currently illegal” because to participate in the DACA program they had to register and prove they have not broken any laws, pay taxes and hold jobs.
Trump’s charge that the military was held hostage also rings false. First, there is a law that the military has to continue functioning during a shutdown in regards to protecting the nation in case of a security breach.
The military does not get paid during the shutdown but they do accumulate pay and are paid when it is over, unlike civilian workers who lose pay when they are put on furlough and do not necessarily ever get back pay.

While Trump has continuously tried to fundraise off the shutdown, which Republicans have tried to blame on the Democrats even though they hold a majority in both Houses of Congress and control the White House – which means they could have made a deal at any time – Trump complains in his latest fundraising letter that “Pelosi raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from her radical base that wants unchecked illegal immigration.”
Pelosi, of course, is Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif), the House minority leader. Neither Pelosi or the Democrats have sought “unchecked illegal immigration,” and in this instance, the only immigration issue was the DACA immigrants, who as noted were not illegal.

With his usual overheat rhetoric, Trump concludes his letter by promising to “fire” the “liberal obstructionist responsible for this disgusting shutdown” in November.
Whatever responsibility the Democrats have, the Republican majority have much more responsibility as the ones who control the government and are behind the radical effort to deport millions of undocumented aliens, many of whom have lived in the U.S. raising families, going to work and paying taxes for many years.
Deporting hundreds of thousands of people from El Salvador who have been in the U.S. legally for decades is radical and inhumane. Not allowing young people who registered under DACA to continue to live their lives as they always have is radical.
The Democrats have never asked for, supported or sought open borders that let all immigrants enter the U.S. and to say they do is an insult and simply false.
There are things to deplore
Refusing to work for what’s best for all Americans instead of taking hype-partisan positions and refusing to go along with deals negotiated by your own party is radical.
Once again Trump is a liar who twists the truth to his own purposes, but this is not the 2016 campaign when that was effective. Millions of Americans now know the truth about Trump, his lies and fake news, his broken promises and failed politics.
If anybody needs to be fired, it is the Republicans – and Trump – before he does even more damage to America, to hard-working immigrants and to muddy the very meaning of truth.
