President Trump upped the ante in his battle with Democrats over the government shutdown caused by his intransigence over immigration issues today in an early morning tweet.
By threatening the nuclear option, Trump is declaring that he’s willing to upend decades of Senate precedent to achieve his short terms goals of building a ludicrously expensive and ineffective wall on the border with Mexico and tightening immigration rules to keep people from what he considers “shithole countries” from entering the U.S.
Democrats are smart enough to know that, while President Trump may be stupid enough to suggest this option, Republican leaders in the Senate, while horrendously malevolent, are savvy enough to know that using the so-called “nuclear option” to allow major legislation to be passed by a simple majority of 51 votes rather than the 60 votes currently required will allow all of their legislation to be reversed rather quickly once control of the Senate changes hands.
And with Trump at the helm of a dysfunctional administration that can’t even manage to keep the government open when his party controls both the Legislative and Executive branches, the possibility of a Democratic victory in the midterm elections in November has moved from a dim prospect to a tantalizingly reachable goal.
Despite the emptiness of his threats, Trump will continue to play the blame game because it’s the only game he knows. As a habitually entitled individual, Trump has never accepted responsibility for any of his decisions, his actions, or their repercussions. He will continue to make false accusations and misattribute blame to mollify his base, but won’t be able to contribute anything but chaos and disorder to the process of trying to reopen the government.
