Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) joined the chorus of the Democrats with whom he caucuses in the Senate in assigning the responsibility for the current government shutdown squarely on the shoulders of Donald Trump and his Republican party who control both the legislative and the executive branches of government.
Sanders expressed his opinion and proposed a common-sense solution in a tweet Sunday morning.
Seems simple enough, but given that the Republican tax plan proves that the GOP cares about catering to the whims of their billionaire oligarch donors over the needs of working families, it’s unlikely that any budget that they would pass would benefit anyone without a sizable stock portfolio and considerable real estate holdings.
The Republicans have already stated their agenda of what they call “reducing entitlements” and the rest of the country calls “eliminating vital social services.” They do this with the excuse that they now need to reduce the enormous deficit they created by giving away unnecessary tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy at the expense of the 99% of the population who aren’t major funding sources for the Republican party.
After eight years of thinking that their only job was to obstruct the agenda of President Obama, the GOP doesn’t actually know how to do their jobs when they control all the levers of power. They’ve spent all of their efforts trying to destroy the government, so how can we expect them to know how to effectively run the government?
Senator Sanders’ admonitions to President Trump and the Republicans are all reasonable expectations of any competent administration. Unfortunately, the operative words here are “competent administration,” something we are all sorely missing right now, Democrats, Independents, and Democratic Socialists alike.
