For the next several days and weeks, fingers will fly, pointing at someone else to assign blame. But music icon John Legend knows exactly why this is happening and he said so in no uncertain terms (tweet below).

This shutdown threat began when President Trump broke America’s promise to Dreamers and threatened to deport 800,000 innocent young people who have known no home but the United States. Trump swore that they wanted to strike a deal to spare Dreamers the cruel fate but balked when a bipartisan deal was reached.

Now, because of Republican deceit and political games, not only are Dreamers’ fate in the balance, nine million children are at risk of losing their health coverage, and with the shutdown, key government programs that protect the environment, combat the opioid crisis, and provide disaster relief are left in the lurch.

On the surface, this is a colossal failure of leadership. But it is more than that, and John Legend knows it.

The truth is, keeping this government open is not a hard task for Republicans. Protecting Dreamers has the support of 75% of the American public and even most Republicans. But in the most racist elements of the Donald Trump base, there is no room for more non-white person in this country.

Legend said it brilliantly. It is a cruel injustice that these bigots have control of our government, and it’s on us to make it right this November.
