Trump has barely made it through his first year in office, but he’s already running his 2020 presidential campaign, or perhaps never stopped his 2016 campaign. His political organization just released a new ad today that is sure to delight his ever-shrinking base while causing the vast majority of Americans to recoil in disgust.
Essentially an attack ad towards the Democrats, it is focused on immigration, and, in the most blatant and malevolent manipulative fashion, it accuses the Democrats of being complicit in all murders committed by illegal immigrants in this country. The timing of the release of the spot and its content show that the negotiations to reopen the government may take a lot longer than anyone anticipated.
Featuring images of Democratic party leaders Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Nancy Pelosi, the ad takes the typical Trump approach of playing the fear card, no matter how overblown those fears are.

The ad opens with a quote from an illegal immigrant who was convicted of murdering two policemen, saying he regrets that he hadn’t been able to kill more of them, before moving to its primary message.
“President Trump is right — build the wall, deport criminals, stop illegal immigration now. Democrats who stand in our way will be complicit in every murder committed by illegal immigrants.”
What will most likely be completely ignored by Trump’s immigrant-fearing base is the fact, borne out by numerous studies, that immigrants, no matter what the status of their legality, are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the United States.
While the campaign ad is premature by several years since no one will have the opportunity to vote for or against Trump until 2020 besides the Congression members who will likely get yet another chance to vote on his impeachment shortly, the tactic may backfire on a President about whom Democrats can easily respond with a list of their own.
It’s quite simple to image an ad pointing out Trump’s complicity in the deaths of everyone who will lose health care because of his constant undermining of the fundamentals of Obamacare or his complicity in the deaths that will be caused by the increased air and water pollution that his gutting of environmental regulations will create or his complicity in the breakup of families separated by his cruel immigration policies.
The biggest problem Democrats will have in crafting a response to Trump’s ad is fitting all of the heinous results of Trump’s agenda into 30 seconds. This may need to be an hour-long special, rather than a 30-second commercial.
