In the wake of his self-inflicted government shutdown, it was inevitable that President Trump would be on Twitter this morning attempting to place the blame on the Democrats. Sure enough, the barrage of tweets from the No Deal President began at shortly after 6 AM Eastern time.
Trump still has his underserved reputation as a deal maker, despite having failed to prevent the shutdown after a last-minute meeting with Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

The Senator walked out of the Oval Office meeting believing he had reached a deal with the President to avert the shutdown, having compromised on the higher levels of military spending that Trump so desired and having indicated more flexibility on border security in exchange for legislation to formally reinstate the DACA program for the Dreamers, the people brought to America illegally as children who have grown up knowing no other home. Trump backed out of the deal later in the day by demanding still more concessions on immigration policy, sealing the fate of the government shutdown.
Having torpedoed any chance of a last-minute deal, Trump proceeded in typical fashion to blame the Democrats for his own actions. He made it personal in his next tweet.
Trump’s continued attempts to paint his own administration’s incompetence on the Democrats fits in with his usual strategy of repeating lies so loudly and frequently that eventually the majority of his gullible base will start parroting his words and believe that despite the fact that Republicans control both house of Congress and the presidency it is the Democrats who caused the shutdown. The fact is that five Republican Senators voted with the Democrats against the continuing resolution that would keep the government in operation, while four Blue Dog Democrats voted for it.
The President next decided to turn his frustration with his inability to simply get whatever he wants by fiat into a campaign plea for the 2018 mid-term elections.
While it’s fairly certain that Trump had to ask an aide to explain to him why the resolution couldn’t pass with a simple majority, his civics lesson was probably necessary as a prelude to his saber rattling for his base.
The President’s next tweet was one of those palette cleansing burps of nationalism that he likes to tweet out in a Tourette’s-like fashion, acting like a punctuation mark in his ramblings.
Our stable-genius-in-chief then went on to the type of repetitive rambling that has lead to charges of early-onset dementia despite his ability to identify a camel.
Or perhaps that should read: “Trump and the Republicans are holding our Military hostage over their desire to waste money on a useless and ineffective border wall rather than trying to help a large group of useful and productive members of our society who pay taxes, serve in our military, and pose no danger to society other than offending our more racist citizens’ sensibilities.
Expect more finger-pointing tweets to come as the showdown over the government shutdown continues.
