Trump’s morning tweets just torpedoed his own party’s plan to avoid a government shutdown

The President of the United States took to Twitter this morning to shoot the foot off of his own party’s efforts to avert a shutdown, just a day before a looming budget deadline threatens to send the government into a full-blown shutdown.

The Republican Party, in an appalling show of nihilistic opportunism, has been attempting to bully Democrats into extending funding for the government by holding additional funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) hostage.

Nine million American children rely on CHIP for their healthcare, and the funds allocated by Congress are about to run dry in many states since the GOP hasn’t bothered to renew the money, even though they’ve had a hundred days to do it in.

Now it’s clear why – so they can use the health of American children as a bargaining chip in order to force the Democrats to pass a government funding bill without addressing the Deferred Actions for Childhood Arrivals program, which the Trump administration ended in September of last year.

800,000 young adults who arrived in the United States as children are set to be deported back to countries they’ve never lived in, thanks to the agenda of soft ethnic cleansing laid out by the Trump administration and the white supremacist ideologues that work behind the scenes.

Democrats are refusing to fund the government until they can get a guarantee that the DACA “Dreamers” will be protected, which in turn requires making some kind of concession to the Republicans about what they want, like curtailing legal immigration (not likely) and some funding for the President to build something along the border that he can call a wall and tweet about (more likely).

But President Trump, in his infinite wisdom, decided to blow up the critical negotiations this morning when he tweeted out the following:

Add your name to millions demanding Congress take action on the President’s crimes. IMPEACH TRUMP & PENCE!

Republicans have been arguing that CHIP should be part of the 30-day continuing resolution to fund the government, crying crocodile tears as they suddenly are subsumed with concern for America’s children after refusing to fund the CHIP program for a hundred days and having attempted to repeal the Affordable Care Act three times last year.

“I feel that it makes no sense for Democrats to try and bring us to a shutdown, to try and cut off CHIP funding for the states that are running out of money, like Minnesota and Washington and Kentucky and other states,” whined House Speaker Paul Ryan in a breathtaking show of shameless opportunism.

But now Democrats have the perfect excuse to shut down the negotiations over CHIP and hold out for a clean DACA bill – which they absolutely should do – seeing as their own president, the ostensible leader of the Republican Party, doesn’t think we should make CHIP part of the funding stopgap bill.

For the second time in barely a week, Trump has thrown a wrench into his own party’s agenda – and Republicans are running out of patience.
