As one of the most famous and athletically accomplished people on the planet, LeBron James has nothing to gain from wading into the political arena. But on this Martin Luther King Day, “King James” was speaking for a higher purpose than self.
Talking with reporters, James started off by talking about the magnitude of the day, but quickly turned to the dangers America faces from the Trump regime.
Dr. King “gave up his life, for the betterment of all of us to be able to live in a free world,” Jame began, and “…today is a great day for people to realize how America was built and how we all have to stand united in order to be at one.”
Just as one might think this was going to be a feel good soundbite, James got very real, saying that the U.S. is “in a difficult state right now as Americans, with the leader of our country [and] we all have to continue to come together and shine a brighter light on — I don’t want to use the word stupidity, but that’s basically what it comes down to.”
The real danger, James pointed out, isn’t only in Trump’s policies but in the effect of his rhetoric.
“The guy in control has given people and racism, and negative racism, an opportunity to be out, and outspoken without fear. And that’s the fearful thing for us, because it’s with you, and it’s around every day, but he’s allowed people to come out and just feel confident about doing negative things,” James said.
Trump despicable battle cries to his base have given many permission to wear their hate on their sleeves, and that’s why it’s so important for real leaders like James to stand up and say enough is enough. The president and his followers should be ashamed of their bigotry and put it to an abrupt end.
