Trump just unleashed a long, pathetic tweetstorm to distract from “shithole” scandal

The president started today chased by one of his biggest scandals to date. Yesterday, it was revealed that Trump lamented the fact that the United States accepts immigrants from “shithole” countries like Haiti and Africa (which is, in fact, a continent and not some monolithic geopolitical region like he implied).

Instead, the racist commander-in-chief suggested we should be looking to court more immigrants from Norway, a largely white country. The backlash was swift and widespread, and rightfully so.

Desperate to distract from the growing controversy, Trump took to Twitter to today to unleash a string of unhinged tweets. He whined that yesterday’s immigration meeting failed to produce funding for his idiotic and pointless border wall and attacked his favorite pet targets: so-called “chain migration” and the visa diversity lottery.

He claimed the USA would be forced to take immigrants from “high crime countries which are doing badly,” which is a veiled way of trying to explain and excuse his “shithole” comment. In reality, the screening for the visa program is very stringent. Even under current standards, it’s exceedingly difficult to get into the United States, and almost impossible if you have a long criminal record.

Democrats are right to stand up for DACA. It was Trump who ended the program, betraying hundreds of thousands of people who have been in this country since childhood. For Trump to try to shift blame to them now is both dishonest and cowardly.

President Trump also demonstrated that he doesn’t understand how government shutdowns work because he said that if Democrats allow one it would “defund” and “shut down” the military. The armed forces continue to be funded, serve, and defend the United States even during government shutdowns, with perhaps a disruption in personnel pay as the worst possible side effect. They’re one of the few necessary elements of the government that is always active.

Trump then decided he should slip some more lies into his tweetstorm, and said his language during yesterday’s meeting was “tough” but that he didn’t use the words reported. Numerous sources have confirmed the original story, and given Trump’s long, long, long, long, long track record of mendacity, one would be a fool to believe him over the media.

He then pivoted to attack Democrats again.

The president realizes he’s once again dropped himself into a media firestorm with his racist comments yesterday and is now pathetically trying to claw his way to safety. It won’t work. The entire world knows what a bigoted, lying, coward he is now.
