Congressional Democrats, led by Rep. Maxine Waters, the ranking member on the House Financial Services Committee, wrote a scathing letter demanding a response from Trump’s Treasury Secretary and former campaign finance chair, Steve Mnuchin, to a previous letter he had ignored, demanding his cooperation in their Russia investigation.
They had wanted to determine the extent of Mnuchin’s knowledge about “potential money laundering violations by Russian persons and the Trump organization.”
They also asked the Goldman Sachs alum, who failed to disclose $100 million in assets on his financial disclosure forms when he was nominated to his current position, questions about how involved he has been in helping Trump cover up his financial crimes.

To paraphrase for the sake of brevity, the Democratic lawmakers asked:
- Do you have knowledge of Trump-related money laundering?
- As finance chair, did you transfer ill-gotten funds on behalf of the Russians?
- Have you been asked to destroy incriminating evidence?
- Have you been asked by any government agency to recuse yourself from regulatory matters relating to the President and his inner circle?
- What steps have you taken to recuse yourself?
- Has Trump or anyone connected to him told you not to recuse yourself [as he did with Attorney General Sessions].
They then called on Mnuchin to recuse himself once and for all and to respond to their letter by January 17 of this year.
The Democrats are right to suspect Mnuchin of foul play, not only because he has not responded to their prior correspondence, but also because the Treasury Department that Mnuchin now runs once censured Mnuchin’s bank OneWest in California for “widespread misconduct” regarding mortgages and other loans.
Since assuming his current role as Treasury Secretary, Mnuchin has been mired in one corruption scandal after another, from using a government plane to take his bride on their honeymoon to using one to take her to “look at the money” in Fort Knox.
Mnuchin should be investigated for helping to cover up Trump and First-Son-in-Law Jared Kushner’s financial ties to Russia and any other financial crimes — for which Russia could blackmail them, in order to get them to pursue Russian, rather than U.S. national interests.
Otherwise Mnuchin runs the risk of making the U.S. Department of Treasury a sponsor of treason.
