Legendary Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein had some advice to the reporters at Fox News when he appeared on their rival news network CNN today.
Speaking with Brian Stelter on “Reliable Sources”, Bernstein issued a challenge to Rupert Murdoch’s right-wing propaganda outlet in their coverage of President Trump’s psychological fitness for office.
“Let them send twenty reporters to talk to every Republican senator, every Republican congressman and come back and tell us what these people are saying in private, on background,” Bernstein suggested.
“I come back to Fox time and again because this is a chance to show that they can be fair and balanced, that they are capable of being a real reporting organization,” the veteran reported opined.
With questions about Trump’s mental health growing rapidly in the light of the revelation that it’s a popular topic of conversation amongst White House staffers according to Michael Wolff’s new book “Fire and Fury: Inside The Trump White House,” Bernstein’s suggestion would be simple common-sense within most well- funded news organizations.
For a network like Fox News, which despite its risible slogan of presenting news in a “fair and balanced” manner actually functions as an in-house public relations agency for the White House, Bernstein’s suggestion would go a long way towards restoring a smidgen of a reputation for actual news-gathering acumen to the cable outlet.
Bernstein’s premise is that Republicans may actually feel comfortable enough with a friendly news organization like Fox News to disclose their true opinions on the President’s “stable genius” claims and the danger of his erratic and unpredictable behavior. Whether any Republicans will be able to drop their understandably defensive posture in discussing Trump remains to be seen, but only if anyone at Fox News takes Bernstein up on his challenge.
Bernstein also pointed out during his interview with Stelter that Trump’s political skills do not correlate with fitness for office. You can watch that exchange in the clip contained in the tweet below.
