A bipartisan meeting on Trump’s mental fitness for the presidency just took place

Questions are piling up about whether or not Trump is mentally fit to hold the office of President, and a revelation from early December adds fuel to that fire.

On December 5 and 6, 2017 a group of Democratic lawmakers and one Republican Senator met with Yale Psychiatrist Dr. Bandy X. Lee for a briefing on Trump’s mental health.

Dr. Lee warned the group that “the President is going to unravel.”

Dr. Lee, who edited “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump,” a compilation of testimonials from experts in the field, pointed to Trump’s twitter sprees as a symptom of a dangerous mental state.

“We feel that the rush of tweeting is an indication of his falling apart under stress. Trump is going to get worse and will become uncontainable with the pressures of the presidency,” Lee told Politico.

That was in early December. Imagine what Lee would say after yesterday’s epic tweet-storm, which featured a wide array of incendiary language directed at all sorts of targets.

There was the diptych, where he antagonized both Pakistan and Palestine for some reason.

And then the big one, where he kicked off happy hour by threatening nuclear war.

And don’t forget the little grace note before dinner, announcing an imaginary awards show for media outlets that were mean to him.

If that doesn’t indicate a troublesome state of mental health, it’s hard to imagine what would.

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders fielded a question on Wednesday from a reporter about whether Americans should be worried about the President’ mental fitness. She deflected, saying we should all be worrying about Kim Jong Un’s mental stability.

This isn’t the first time it’s come up. In December, Trump appeared to slur his speech during a press conference announcing the decision to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. The White House tried to explain it away with a diagnosis of “dry throat.”

No doubt we’ll be hearing the words “25th Amendment” get tossed around more and more often, if the coming days are anything like yesterday. That’s the one where the vice president and the Cabinet can declare the president “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office” and remove him.

Let’s hope Trump at least has enough mental clarity to keep his finger off that “nuclear button” until then, and that the bipartisan support for removal under the 25th Amendment gains momentum.
