Tragedy has struck again in America, in what has become an all too familiar story. NJ.com reports that a 16-year-old boy in Jersey Shore murdered his family on New Year’s Eve. The teenager wielded a semi-automatic rifle to kill his parents, his sister, and a friend of the family. Two members of the family were at the scene but were able to escape safely.
The weapon was legally owned and registered. A neighbor told NJ.com that the killer received special assistance and was cared for by his mother. The local community was shocked by the murders and struggled to provide an explanation, as is so often the case in tragedies like this. There is no known motive at this point.
The shooter’s name is being withheld due to his age. The deceased are his father, Steven Kologi, mother Linda Kologi, sister Brittany Kologi, and family friend Mary Schultz.
There were over 400 mass shootings in the United States last year alone. 2017 also saw the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history in October, when a man opened fire in Las Vegas on concertgoers. While the public outcry for action after the killings was overwhelming, no substantive legislative measures have yet to be taken.
Horrific events like this are avoidable. Congress must take action to curb the epidemic of gun violence, and it’s on every voter to get involved. Call your representatives and senators and demand that they take action.
