Four sheriff’s deputies were wounded and one killed yesterday in Colorado while responding to a noise disturbance call. Two civilians were also injured. The murdered officer was a 29-year-old father of two. The AP reports that some 100 rounds were fired by the shooter.

Now, details about the shooter have begun to emerge. The killer, Matthew Riehl, is a veteran of the Iraq War and an avid member of the alt-right. The Raw Story reports that Riehl is fond of sharing memes from the far-right, white nationalist ideology, including the frog Pepe, an image which has been co-opted by racists and turned into a mascot of sorts for their vile movement. His Facebook page is also littered with images of himself shooting rifles.

J.J. MacNab of Forbes reported on some of the memes Riehl — posting under the alias Matt Gonzo — shared to his Facebook page.

MacNab also tweeted out several details about Riehl in an effort to build a profile of the shooter.

Riehl identifies as libertarian and stated in a video that he was running for sheriff. Police have yet to confirm if his stated animus against the sheriff’s department was the reason for the shooting, but it certainly seems likely.

The killer was trained in shooting and the company responsible for training him has issued an official statement in response to the murder.

Unfortunately, this is just the latest incident in what has become an all too familiar American trend. The epidemic of gun violence sweeping this country shows no signs of stopping. It’s past time that the nation has a sober discussion about its gun culture, and takes substantive steps to prevent further tragedies like this one.
