Trump just took a photo with his interns, but there’s a huge problem

In Trump’s photo with the White House interns, one young man was caught giving the “white power” sign while posing with the President.

The intern, Jack Breuer, a graduate of Emory University, held up his hand with an “OK” signal, which has links to far-right circles in which the same gesture is frequently flashed.

When given with the right hand, the “OK” sign can be viewed as a “W” with the outstretched pinky, ring, and middle fingers, and the circle (pointer finger and thumb) down the wrist forming the “P.” “WP,” then, represents “white power.”

According to The Daily Mail:

“It is the same sign that white nationalist Richard Spencer gave on the steps of the Trump International Hotel on election night and that right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos posed with in front of the White House.

It was also seen at the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August – the same day an alleged Nazi sympathizer accelerated his car into anti-protesters, killing one and injuring several others.”

Most tellingly, Breuer worked for Stephen Miller, Trump’s senior adviser for policy. Miller, of course, has a sordid past espousing his own racist views.

“Context is everything. Jack is pictured with President Trump, one of the most controversial leaders we’ve had,” one intern explained. “It is a distinct symbol known in alt-right circles and what makes it worse is that he is doing it in the East Room just below the portrait of George Washington.”

Of course, while it is not Trump’s fault that an intern flashed the “white power” gesture, it is a testament to the kind of people drawn to this administration, as well as how emboldened white supremacists now feel with this particular President in power.

Even more shameful is the fact that the White House doesn’t have the wherewithal to withhold the photo given the blatant display of racism. Shameful, that is, but not surprising.
