One of the biggest issues facing President Trump and the Republican Party is the increasingly pressing need to work out a deal with the Democrats on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which has allowed nearly a million children who arrived in the United States as toddlers to grow up here, safe from the batons and cuffs of the sadistic thugs at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.
If they don’t get a deal worked out, Democrats are likely to (and absolutely should) shut down the government as soon as next week, causing yet another headache for a Trump administration already reeling from the humiliation of the President’s racist remarks.
But Democrats are accusing the devious extremists that advise the President – particularly white supremacist Steven Miller – of purposefully attempting to sabotage the negotiations, which are being led by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC).
For example, yesterday, Democrats were invited to “huddle” with the President and discuss a potential deal exchanging protection for the “Dreamers” for something resembling a border wall and restrictions on legal immigration.
They were very displeased to see hardline extremists Tom Cotton (R-AR), David Perdue (R-GA), and Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) waiting for them.
“Graham and Durbin expect to have a meeting, they show up and there’s this anti-immigrant cast of characters there. And that was obviously designed by Stephen Miller to try to kill the deal,” complained one Democratic aide to the Hill.
The groups met again on Friday, but little progress was made, according to POLITICO. Republicans tried to drag previously off-limit “sanctuary city” policies and other “enforcement” policies aimed at expanding the abilities of ICE to hunt down, abuse, and funnel undocumented immigrants into the for-profit migrant detention centers.
In response, Democrats took the visa diversity program off the table – the program that inspired President Trump’s appalling “shithole” comments yesterday. Those remarks have “enraged” House Democrats, who are doubling down on their refusal to expand the scope of the talks. “No progress” was reached today.
Further complicating the issue is the ridiculous dysfunction of the White House and the newfound independence of the Department of Homeland Security, which announced that they were not representing the White House in Friday’s talks, which surprised all others present.
Graham and Durbin have already reached a deal to save the DREAMERS that the White House has already rejected out of time.
Given that President Trump barely has even a passing interest in the details of government, progressives are worried that hardline racists like Steven Miller are in firm command of White House immigration policy – and the ever-volatile Trump might sabotage the entire thing on a whim.
It’s going to be a long and arduous road before a deal is reached – and if not, the entire government should be shut down. We owe it to the 800,000 DREAMERS to fight for them tooth and nail. They are Americans as much as any of us and deserve to be able to live here with dignity and security.
