Bernie Sanders just sent a shot across Trump’s bow with a viral New Year’s resolution

Today marks the beginning of a new year, full of exciting possibilities and potential. Last year seemed interminable for a battered and bloodied American progressive left; our resolute spirits reeling under the incessant barrage of startling cruelty and staggering idiocy unleashed by the Trump administration.

But this year represents a new beginning. With the midterm elections soon upon us and all signs pointing to a tsunami of backlash against the servants of the plutocracy and their grotesque ringleader, the tradition of New Years’ resolutions takes on a more pressing significance.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the most popular politician in the United States and one of the left’s most influential figures, set the tone for the upcoming year with a powerful and decisive statement.

2018 represents a new chance for the Democratic Party to reform itself and shed the timid deference to the sensibilities of the donor class that played a large role in our defeats in the 2016 elections.

While our nation may seem more divided than ever before, there are some key policy issues that we can seize upon to reach across the aisle.

By endorsing policies with tangible benefits that will demonstrably improve the lives of everyday Americans – like single-payer healthcare and free public college – and by making it clear that we have the interests of the voters at heart, and not the needs of business or the rich, we can set ourselves apart from a Republican Party that just orchestrated an enormous transfer of wealth from the middle and working classes to a bloated and sneering oligarchy.

The battle lines have been drawn. It is no longer about left vs. right but rather rich vs. poor – and the rich have made it very clear they couldn’t care less if the rest of us died.

Let us resolve to not meekly sit back as our rights and our futures are trampled under the creeping fascism of Trump and the host of ghouls and jackals that do his bidding, but let us resolve to come together and fight harder than we ever have before. This is going to be our year.
